How And When To Use A Dog Ramp For Going Down Stairs
August 19, 2009
Generally speaking, a dog ramp would not be used to help a dog down an entire flight of stairs. However, when assisting your dog in getting down a couple of steps a ramp may be very helpful and could prevent you or your dog taking a nasty tumble down the steps.
When To Use A Dog Ramp
When helping your dog down two or three steps from a front door or a back porch to the ground level, a ramp which is longer than the total distance of your steps from top to bottom can help you get your dog safely down a few steps. A special type of ramp that either folds or “telescopes” are designed to extend and create a longer surface on which your dog can walk.
How To Use A Dog Ramp
A special-purpose dog ramp should be placed at the upper level with the fully extended ramp resting flat on the ground surface. Make sure that both the top and bottom of the ramp are securely positioned with enough of the ramp ledge resting solidly on the top and bottom surface upon which the ramp is resting. By extending the ramp to a longer length than that of your steps, you enable the dog to walk at a less steep decline than if you simply rested the ramp flat against the edge of the steps. A gradual slope will decrease the risk of your dog walking too quickly down the ramp and possibly falling or stumbling. You will also be able to guide your dog better when they walk slowly down the ramp.
Safety Precaution When Using A Portable Or Folding Dog Ramp
Make sure the ramp in its fully extended state is rating to hold the weight of your dog. Never stand on the ramp with your dog. Also never let anyone else walk in front of or behind your dog on the ramp. The combined weight of a dog and a person, even a young or light-weight individual could cause the ramp to break or flex to such an extent that it could cause an injury to all involved. So, all humans should stay OFF the ramp!
Better Solution For Getting A Dog Down A Flight Of Stairs
A much better solution for getting your dog down an entire flight of stair steps is to use a dog harness specially designed for lifting and transporting a dog. This is especially important for large or heavy dogs. For example, a dog lifting harness can be very helpful to guide and support a dog with arthritis safely down the steps. A lifting harness is specially designed to distribute a dog’s weight across their chest in case the guardian has to lift up on the harness handle if the dog starts to stumble or lose their footing. A combination of mobility devices, medication, and special exercises will help your dog regain their ability to walk and increase their level of comfort.
