Dog Carts

When a dog ages they usually lose their ability to walk and run as they did as a puppy. Even my dog Ralphie, who had the agility of a gazelle in his youth, is struggling with shaky hind legs, painful arthritis in his front legs, and a tendency to injure his legs and neck if he tries to go down steps too often or quickly. He is, thank goodness, still mobile and walking on his own for the most part. But for Napoleon, the story was different.

When Will A Dog Cart Help?

Napoleon was our beloved dog, who many years ago crossed the rainbow bridge. He was a basset hound who lived to be 2 weeks shy of 15. If you know anything about that breed, you know that their average life span is 8 to 10 years. They are prone to back injuries and Napoleon was not spared. He ruptured two discs one two separate occasions and he had back surgery for both. The first surgery went reasonable well and Napoleon regained most of his ability to walk. However, the second surgery failed and Napoleon remained lame in both of his rear legs.

Still Young In Spirit And Will To Live

Although some people may have chosen euthanasia at that point, we weren’t ready to take that step. Instead, we chose to order a custom-made dog cart for Napoleon. When placed in his cart, Napoleon’s two lame (hind) legs rested against a cushioned bar. He was able to navigate his way around the house and outside while in his cart. He would even stretch in his cart which seemed to make his back feel better. The following video is not Napoleon, but it gives you an idea of another large breed dog who is obviously enjoying his new found freedom of mobility with his new dog cart.

You can see the new-found joy this cart has brought the dog. And you can hear the joy and delight in the voices of the man and woman. They suddenly realized what a new lease on life this cart had give their dog. The other dog looks pretty happy about having their old buddy back… full of pep and excitement!

I strongly encourage you to get your dog measured and place your order NOW for a custom-made dog cart for your dog, BEFORE your dog has lost total control or movement in one or more limbs. It will help both you and your dog to get accustomed to using the dog cart, both inside your house and outdoors before the sudden onset of becoming lame. There is nothing more heartbreaking than watching your dog drag their body across the floor… if they even have the strength to do that.
